The St. Mark Community Education Program (SMCEP) provides adult immigrants and their families in Dorchester, MA and surrounding towns with English classes and support in attaining citizenship. Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2005, it is overseen by a full-time Executive Director and a Board of Directors and is funded solely by grants and donations.
It was in the belief that compassion, commitment to inclusion, and mutual respect are fundamental to our neighborhoods’ growth and well-being that a number of caring people from St. Mark Parish got together in 1999 and decided to provide English and Citizenship classes to working adult immigrants in Dorchester and surrounding areas.
From September to May SMCEP provides 8 English classes at 3 levels – evenings and weekends to accommodate the schedules of working adults – taught by experienced, professional instructors. We are the only ESOL program in our area to offer Sunday morning classes at 2 levels for students who work six days a week.
Our computer lab is an integral part of our classes and introduces students to essential skills and resources for learning English and preparing for citizenship.
We also offer two Conversation Groups weekly, Thursday evening from 7- 8:30 and Saturday morning from 10 – 11:30, facilitated by volunteers and open to the community, where adult learners can practice listening to and speaking in English..
In partnership with the Irish International Immigrant Center (IIC), we help
40+ adult immigrants and their families apply for and achieve citizenship each year. We provide an English for Citizenship class on Saturday mornings that prepares applicants with the knowledge of U.S. history and government and with the literacy and oral skills necessary to pass their citizenship interviews.
As indicated above, SMCEP is supported solely through donations and grants and through the generosity of St. Mark’s Parish. The program is led by our Board of Directors and our Executive Director, who reflect the multicultural nature and goals of the program.
