Volunteer at SMCEP

power-featureAre you are interested in helping adults in our community learn English to improve their lives. If so, there are many ways you can help.

  • Beginner English Class Co-teacher
    Are you passionate about helping new immigrants learn basic survival English skills? Do you have CELTA or TEFL ESL teaching certification or experience with teaching beginner English learners?  If you can commit 4-5 hours per week for 8 weeks to co-teach a group of 10-12 learners, then this volunteer role is for you. SMCEP provides training, curriculum, and classroom activities
  • Facilitators for Conversation Groups on Thursday evenings, 7-8:30 pm and Saturday mornings, 10-11:30 am. Facilitators work with 1- 4 immigrants
    Facilitate group meetings in which intermediate/advanced ESL adult English language learners practice English conversation. These groups provide more opportunity for our students and community members to improve their speaking and listening abilities in English. . This is a weekly, 1½-hour commitment for a minimum of three months.
  •  Tutors for ESOL classes
    Work with up to three students to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in our evening and Sunday morning classes, 9 am – 12 noon. Evening classes are held Mondays –Thursdays 6:30 – 9 pm. This is a weekly commitment of at least one class  per week for a minimum of three months.
  • Tutors for Citizenship classes
    Work with up to three students to help them prepare for the citizenship exam by practicing interviewing skills, studying the 100 questions and writing and reading simple English sentences as well as filling out the citizenship application, Saturday mornings from 9-12. Citizenship classes are held 3-4 times a year for 10 weeks. . This is a weekly commitment for a minimum of three months.
  • Technology Assistant
    Assist instructors in using tablets and smart phones in the classroom
  • Computer Lab Instructors and assistants
  1. Teach computer classes to small groups of students on Saturday mornings.
  2. Work with 1 to 2 students to help them improve basic computer skills
  • Database administrator
    Help develop and maintain data base as well as enter data and run reports.
  • Online fundraising
    Do you have a virtual green thumb?
  • Become a Tutor in our classrooms helping students learn English
